MPA Degree: Specialization in Emergency Management


The demand for specialists in emergency management continues to grow. The much-publicized 9/11 terror attacks and destruction from Hurricane Katrina, along with the prospects of future terrorism and the threat of a flu pandemic, among others, have raised awareness and created a heightened need for formally trained professionals. In addition, although gaining less media attention, is the call for people with expertise in areas such as the safe handling of hazardous materials, general risk and threat assessment, search operations, business continuity during crises, and event planning and disaster preparedness.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities in nonprofit or disaster relief organizations are expected to increase as much as 22 percent by 2018, while emergency management jobs at police and fire departments are forecasted to grow by 10 and 19 percent, respectively, through 20181. Similarly, US News & World Report lists Emergency Management Specialist among its "Best Jobs 2011."
